IGNITE THE GIFT FROM WITHIN

ABOUT LORENZO RAY PHILLIPS

Today, Lorenzo Ray Phillips is a motivational speaker who ignites greatness in people through inspirational speaking. He is an Industrial Engineer with a master’s degree in business administration and a former Assistant Professor of Military Science at UCLA. He was the 2002 U.S. Army Instructor of the Year.

He was also the former director of public works for a small military installation in Japan. He is a mentor, coach, tutor, and father of four children. His wife is a retired Navy Nurse, and they reside in San Antonio, Texas. Colonel Phillips wants everyone to ignite the gift from within, commit to making a positive change by working and practicing those divine gifts, skills, and talents.

He is on a mission to tell every young person that they are unique and magnificent. There is no one in the world exactly like them. There is a gift within them that leads to their greatness and their purpose in life. However, they must do something to make it happen.

WHAT I'M ABOUT

Colonel Phillips is a native of Detroit, Michigan. He started his 32-year military career by enlisting as an infantry soldier. He eventually earned his commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He was a Distinguished Military Graduate from Michigan State University in 1985.  He served as an infantry and communications officer throughout his career and concluded his military service as a Certified Emergency Manager. His duty stations included Korea, Germany, Georgia, and California, to name a few. He stayed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in the Special Operations Command and the 18th Airborne Corps for several years.

Fort Bragg represents several deployments and exercises, including Special Operations deployments, Desert Shield-Desert Storm, Hurricane Andrew support, and more.  He was selected to be an Observer-Controller at the National Training Center in Fort Irwin, California, teaching soldiers how to manage communications in a wartime environment. He was the J-6 Communications Director for Task Force GTMO in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba where he met his wife, Mary Phillips. Later, he was the Emergency Manager for the Army and Air Force in Guam.

We are grateful for the time, energy, and positivity you shared with staff and students last week. You engaged them with stories and hope. I appreciate your belief in the "magnificence" of each child. Our staff certainly believe this as well and cultivate a school community that supports them so well.

I just wanted to reach out and say thank you for your efforts yesterday. This needs to be an annual event. I bcc'd you in an email response to Kevin Gudgel the Leadership/ASB teacher and coordinator. Again, thanks much for your time, humor and wisdom imparted upon these young people.

Thanks for taking your time to come and work with our youth. The kids talked afterwards and enjoyed what you had to say. Planting seeds with these kids is what we are doing. Your talks may get them through some hard times but will have its greatest affect as they get older.

The kids really enjoyed it. I will forward your information to Sam Wasson who teaches some servant leadership classes at school. She may be interested. I appreciate you taking the time to work with the kids. You have a great message and are very entertaining.
